Small Projects Showcase: Dairy Store Move
Location: East Campus, UNL | Lincoln, NE
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Situated on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s East Campus, the UNL Dairy Store has been a campus fixture for more than 100 years. In 2019, the store was moved from its location on the south side of the Food Industry Complex to the north side of the complex. The new space is in the same building as before, but faces north toward the Nebraska East Union.
“We're hoping that it will really attract students and become the heart of East Campus, and that all the buildings will all play off each other.”
The renovated, larger space creates a more modernized storefront and offers more seating with a view of Legacy Plaza—a green space which includes four sculptures of Nebraskans who have served as U.S. secretaries of agriculture and is being transformed into a focal point of activity on East Campus. New features include bar seating that overlooks the green space and plugins for electronics and devices.
The Dairy Store remained open throughout construction, so customers were not disrupted. Construction began in April 2019 and the project was completed in September 2019. The move was part of the East Campus master plan, which includes renovations to the Nebraska East Union, C.Y. Thompson Library and the green space.
