Barbara Oakley, Ph.D., is set to open the 2018 with keynote presentation, Learning How to Learn: Powerful Mental Tools to Help You Master Tough Subjects.

Boasting an impressive resume, including rising to the ranks of Captain in the U.S. Army and working with companies such as Ford, Oakley has worked as a communication expert in Antarctica and as a Russian translator on board Soviet trawlers. After more than two decades of military service, Oakley received her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from Oakland University and published eight books and various research articles on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior.

Oakley’s extensive life experience will provide invaluable insights into practical ways that individuals can change and grow in complex environments, no matter their age or stage in life. She will explain how to learn effectively, drawing on key research from cognitive psychology and neuroscience.

In addition to the keynote presentation, Oakley will also offer a featured break out session, Broaden Your Passion! Encouraging Women in Stem.

In addition, Tanya Joosten, Ph.D., the co-director and principal investigator at the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, joins the day as a featured guest. Joosten is deeply involved in planning for the future of education and her efforts have been highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Ed Tech Magazine and eCampus News.

The event is free and open to NU administrators, faculty and staff. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. .

The event takes place on May 8 at the Cornhusker Marriott in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska and strives to build upon the University of Nebraska’s mission to embrace technology in order to enhance both teaching and learning, providing key support systems and meeting institutional goals.
