The 2023-2024 funding program was designed to enhance competitiveness of University of Nebraska (NU) faculty for federal extramural funding by fully leveraging the intellectual capacity and research resources across the NU campuses. The Fiscal Year 2025 request for applications focuses on a single, flexible grant type. This single-year seed grant is designed to facilitate research collaborations among faculty in any discipline that will help position them to compete for federal extramural funding.
2022-23 Collaboration Initiative
The 2022-2023 funding program was designed to support new and existing research collaborations at two or more Nebraska campuses to either 1) Generate preliminary data critical to federal extramural research proposals or resubmissions, 2) Initiate new exploratory research that, with further development, would be the basis for a federal grant application, or 3) Develop capabilities that would allow the University of Nebraska’s National Strategic Research Initiative (NSRI) to meet the needs of its sponsor.
2021-22 Collaboration Initiative
The 2021-2022 funding program was designed to facilitate new and strengthen existing research collaborations among faculty studying extramurally-fundable research question(s) in any discipline. This initiative was focused on helping position faculty teams to be more competitive for existing federal/foundation extramural funding programs by focusing on three areas of funding (see below).
2020-21 Collaboration Initiative
The 2020-2021 funding program was designed to facilitate new and strengthen existing research collaborations among faculty studying extramurally-fundable research question(s) in any discipline. This initiative was focused on helping position faculty teams to be more competitive for existing federal/foundation extramural funding programs by focusing on three areas of funding (see below).

The 2019-2020 funding program was designed to facilitate new and strengthen existing research collaborations among faculty studying extramurally-fundable research question(s) in any discipline. This initiative was focused on helping position faculty teams to be more competitive for existing federal/ foundation extramural funding programs.
2018-19 Collaboration Initiative
The 2018-2019 funding program was designed to facilitate new and strengthen existing research collaborations among faculty studying extramurally-fundable research question(s) in any discipline. This initiative was focused on helping position faculty teams to be more competitive for existing federal/ foundation extramural funding programs.
2017-18 Collaboration Initiative: "System Science"
The System Science funding program was designed to facilitate new and strengthen existing research collaborations among faculty studying extramurally-fundable research question(s) from a broad multidisciplinary “systems” approach. This initiative focused on helping position faculty teams to be more competitive for the extramural funding required to further their research and to better understand the wide variety of complex systems found in nature and society.
2016-17 Collaboration Initiative: "System Science" and "Food for Health"
The Food for Health Collaboration Initiative was a comprehensive effort to further enhance Nebraska’s research capacity to address critical societal and human health issues related to food.
The System Science Collaboration Initiative was designed to facilitate new and strengthen existing research collaborations among faculty in engineering, and/or quantitative/data-science with any other discipline. The initiative was focused on helping position faculty teams to be more competitive for the extramural funding required to further their studies and to better understand the wide variety of complex systems found in nature and society.
2015-16 Collaboration Initiative: "Food for Health"
The Food for Health Collaboration Initiative was a comprehensive effort to further enhance Nebraska’s research capacity to address critical societal and human health issues related to food. Nebraska EPSCoR also invested so that all Nebraska research institutions with expertise in Food for Health could strategically partner to grow the state’s research capacity and competitiveness.
